Repurposing Kitchen Cabinets

A client of mine recently expressed to me, "I have these high quality cabinets in my kitchen, but we really just don't like them or the layout of the kitchen. We knew that when we bought the house that we would eventually remodel the kitchen, but I am struggling with the idea of putting these cabinets in the dumpster." Many clients can't rationalize the idea of throwing away perfectly good cabinets and there is no reason to trash them. Repurposing your kitchen cabinets in another location in your home is a great way to gain storage space as well as being economically and environmentally friendly.

A basement, mudroom, laundry room or even your garage can become your unwanted kitchen cabinets new home. It is extremely important to discuss your ideas with your contractor prior to finalization of our kitchen remodel budget. You need to inform your contractor that it is your intention to repurpose your kitchen cabinets and that you want to preserve your cabinets during the kitchen demolition. The cabinets will need to be gently removed from the walls and all the hardware and hinges will need to be preserved as well. You may also want to discuss where the cabinets will be stored during the renovation and negotiate the cost of installing the cabinets in their new location.

Once removed from your kitchen, these cabinets can be installed in another location or even in multiple locations in your home to meet your needs. Installing a few cabinets above your washer and dryer is a great way to store and organize all your detergents and other laundry supplies, reducing the amount of clutter on top of the machines. Another laundry room idea is to remove the doors from one of the cabinets and install a hanging rod so that any clothes that need to be hung to dry can be placed here or can be hung here after they are ironed.

Another way to integrate your kitchen cabinets into their new home is to change the hardware. Adding new drawer pulls or knobs on your cabinets once they've reached their new destination can be a fun way to incorporate these cabinets to their new home. For instance, if you are putting the cabinets in a basement playroom, you could add colorful and playful knobs to match the décor of the playroom. If the cabinets will be behind the bar in your new basement man cave, then you could replace boring knobs with knobs that feature favorite brews' bottle caps.

As the old saying goes- one man's trash is another man's treasure. It just so happens that in this case, your trash is also your treasure!
